look, if we wrote like MA Lits made us out to write, we’d be writing to leave little clues, the writing becomes an exemplar of a literary theory — i think this is what the objection to the workshop poem is all about. in a sense, it’s a form. if we treat it that way, then what we’re focused on is what’s written, rather than what we should do as a writer and focus on the writing. if we learn how to be our own editor, or as much of one as we can be to ourself, then like teaching our children good habits (manners, behaviors) by correcting (or editing) their bad ones, we can do the same to our prose and our verse. MA Lits are critics/analysts of what’s released into the world by the writer; they are readers and they think differently, have a different perspective on the text. the way relatives and neighbors have expectations of a child that for the child’s own parents and siblings to also have of the child could be crippling. that would be a third perspective a writer would need to develop, but i don’t think it’s easy to do towards your own work — at best you can intelligently discuss your own work only in terms that you are the best editor you can be for yourself (a circular and vacuous description); we always need an apologist and an ad man.
